The Umoja Community strives to create pathways for students to achieve their dream of higher education through an ethic of love and intentional support. It is with great pride that the Umoja Education Foundation and its partners are able to offer over $13,000 in scholarships to our students to reward and encourage them on their path to greatness.

GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP

Les Shaw Scholarship (1): $2,500: Rewarded to an African American continuing male student.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must be currently enrolled at an Umoja member college and be an active participant of an Umoja program during the 2016-17 academic year.
  2. Applicants must have a cumulative 2.0 minimum gpa to apply for any Umoja scholarship.

  TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIPS  

  1. Transfer Scholarships (3): $2,500: (1 UC, 1 CSU, 1 HBCU) Rewarded to Umoja students transferring in the fall of 2017.
  2. California HBCU Transfer Initiative Scholarship (1): $1,000 Rewarded to a Umoja student transferring to an HBCU in the fall of 2017.
  3. Technology Scholarships (3): up to $800 Rewarded toward the purchase of a laptop for Umoja students transferring in the fall of 2017.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must be currently enrolled at an Umoja member college and be an active participant of an Umoja program during the 2016-17 academic year.
  2. Applicants must have a cumulative 2.0 minimum gpa to apply for any Umoja scholarship.
  3. Applicants must provide a letter of acceptance from the University or College where they will be transferring to.

  1. Essay: Justify how you will use an Umoja Education Foundation Award in no more than 500 words. Your synopsis must include the following information:
    • Details that describe the way that you embody or engage with any of Umoja's eighteen core practices.
    • There are no formatting guidelines for the synopsis other than the 500-word limit.
  2. Upload Unofficial Transcripts
  3. Upload one letter of support/recommendation from your Umoja Coordinator, Umoja Counselor, Umoja affiliated faculty member or Dean.
  4. Upload letter of acceptance if applying for a transfer scholarship.
  5. Complete and submit the electronic application by Friday April 21, 2017.
  6. All applicants must upload and provide Umoja with a short bio and a headshot/face photo to be published to the Umoja website and/or publications for the selected winners.

Selection Notice: Recipients will be notified by May 5th, 2017 via email and phone call. Please note that although eligible students can apply to multiple scholarships, their will only be one scholarship awarded per recipient. The winners will receive a letter of award and acknowledgement at next statewide Umoja Conference in September.
